The Fulton Mansion was the only house in the region that had central lighting, central heating, and indoor running hot and cold water systems.

The Mansion was built between 1874 and 1877. It took 3 years to complete.

It was built by George Fulton and his wife Harriet. George was an engineer, and he put that knowledge to use to build this house.

Rain water was collected by the roof and drained into the basement cisterns.

The central lighting system did not use electricity. Instead it ran on gas. They had to make their own gas for the system on the property.

The house is built with the French Second Empire style.

The mansion is very close to the water. It has survived several hurricanes. Including direct hits. During a direct hit in the early 1900's, it was the only house left standing. George built this house to withstand hurricanes.

The house is not furnished with the original furnishings. However, it has been furnished with only items from that time period.

This is a plant room, called a conservatory. It has a shell crete floor. They did not have all the materials in the area to make concrete so they used crushed sea shells.

The work around the light fixture is made of plaster.

The wood work in the house is fantastic. This is a sliding door that goes into the wall.

Mr Fulton made his money to build the house as a cattle baron.

The house is built with high ceilings and with windows above the doors for ventalation.

They left a few places in one room so you could see the contruction.

The house was built by stacking wood and then driving stakes thur the wood. They say that there is enough wood in this house to build a small subdivision. This construction is why the house has survived several hurricanes.

This pictures shows the water and heating system. They would pump water up to the storage tank in the attic. This would give the water system pressure.
