What should we do about sin?

1 realize that God hates sin and that it has a pentalty.

Pro 8:13 The fear of the LORD [is] to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

Rom 6:23 For the wages of sin [is] death; but the gift of God [is] eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. If nothing is done about your sin, then its wages is eternal death. Biblical death means separation. When we die that is not the end of us. Our soul goes on either to heaven if we are saved or hell if we are not. If you die in your sin, then you will be eternally separated from God in hell.

2 we need to be sorry for our sin.

Psa 38:18 For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

2Co 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

Godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation. Repentance is a change of mind. It is not works. Godly sorrow leads to you changing your mind and changing your mind leads to salvation.

3 Realize that Christ died for our sin.

Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

2Co 5:21 For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Christ died for your sin. God the father made God the son to actually be sin for us so that we could accept Him as savior. Jesus went to the cross and paid your sin wages. He took all your sin upon Himself.

4 we need to repent of our sin and confess our sin.

Act 3:19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord;

Pro 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh [them] shall have mercy.

Job 11:14 If iniquity [be] in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles

Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

If you have not yet accepted Christ, why not stop reading and pray to God, admit that you are a sinner and ask Him to save you.

5 After we are saved we need to keep from sin, and then you are to hate evil.

Psa 97:10 Ye that love the LORD, hate evil: he preserveth the souls of his saints; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked.

Amo 5:15 Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.

Rom 12:9 [Let] love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good.

Psa 34:14 Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

2Ti 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

1Th 5:22 Abstain from all appearance of evil.

Psa 4:4 Stand in awe, and sin not: commune with your own heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.

Heb 12:1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset [us], and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,

Col 3:5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

And some preachers will say that sin is not on the menu in their church. The don't preach about it. They do not want to convict anyone about their sin. By this practice they are keeping God's will from the people! God's will for you after you are saved is to Abstain from all appearance of evil.

6 Realize that once you are saved that you no longer have to serve sin.

Rom 6:6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with [him], that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.

The old man is crucified. He has lost his power over you. Now the old sin nature is still in you but instead of him having full control and free reign, he has been crucified.

1Co 10:13 There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God [is] faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear [it].

If you sin after you are saved, you did it because you wanted to. God will always provide a way to escape with the temptation.

1Jo 4:4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

God is greater than Satan, and you need to rely on His power.

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, [which is] your reasonable service. Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what [is] that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

You are to pursue holiness, but you are to do it "by the mercies of God". And not by the power of the flesh. You do this by asking for His mercies every day. Pray and ask Him to give you the grace to live your life today in a way that is pleasing to Him and tomorrow get up and ask Him for the same thing.

7 Being made free from sin you are now to serve God.

Rom 6:22 But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

This is service pure and simple. You are to become a servant of God. In other words DO NOT BE A PEW SITTER!

When you do mess up and fall into sin then you are to confess it to God.

1Jo 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Psa 32:5 I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

Confess your sin to God. He has promised to forgive you. You will be forgiven but you will still have to live with the consequences of your sin. Say a Christian gets in a fight and has his ear cut off and destroyed. Now if he asks God to forgive him for picking the fight, he will be forgiven. But God will not give him another ear. He will have to live with it for the rest of his life. And the same is true for any sin you commit. All sin will have consequences. Some more severe than others. Some sins will bring God's chastisement. Other sins will cause Him to withhold blessings. Some sins can ruin your life and the lives of others. That is why God does not say go ahead and sin and I will forgive you. No God says hate the evil, depart from it, leave it alone, don't do it in the first place. But if you do sin, confess it to me and I will forgive it so that it will not count against you when you have to stand and give an answer at the judgment seat of Christ.
