Thought on This Chapter
JN 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is
truth.
In Chapter 15 Jesus says that we are clean thru the
Word of God. And in this chapter Jesus teaches that we are Sanctified thru the
Word of God.
To sanctify is to set apart unto God. Being set
apart to something requires being set apart from something. The sanctify
to in verse 17 is God. The setting apart from is the world. You see this
in the context of the surrounding verses. Not the world physically (verse 15),
but this evil world system.
After we are saved we are to grow in the Lord. We
are to become more and more set apart unto Him. The Word of God is
necessary to this process. We need the Word of God to grow.
1Pe 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of
the word, that ye may grow thereby:
Do you want to grow in the Lord more?
Do you want to be more set apart unto God?
Do you want to have a closer walk with the Lord?
Then you need to be studying the Bible more.
Sadly to say many churches today do not understand this
principal. They might understand it intellectually but not practically.
Instead of the studying of the Word of God being the main thing, entertainment has
become the main thing. Other churches it is rituals, and some are more
social clubs than anything else. A good church will have a solid Sunday
school program for all ages. The preaching and the teaching of God's Word
will have a prominent place in all services. I hope that you have a good
Bible teaching church to go to. But even that is not enough. You
also need to be in the Word for yourself every day.
Thought On This Chapter
JN 17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath
hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
The world hates Christians. In many parts of the
world people are killed simply because they are Christians. Others get
thrown into prison, or persecuted in a variety of ways. It seems like the
fewer Christians there are in a country, that the greater the persecution.
Worldly men get more embolden with larger numbers.
America was founded as a Christian nation. Not
every one believed back then, but a large number did. Most of the founders
did. Some to a greater degree than others. For most of the last 200
years Christians have been spared the brunt of persecution in America. Oh
there has been some, but nothing like the rest of the world. Being
Christian has been mainstream in this country. That is one reason for a
lack of persecution here. But this is rapidly changing. How many
lawsuits have you seen in the news that have been brought because someone is
practicing Christianity. A teacher cannot even mention it. A teacher
cannot even have a Bible on their desk. Others get attacked for praying in
Jesus' name. Some attack for having a Christmas tree or a manger scene.
Employees are told to not even say Merry Christmas.
As the number of true Christians goes down attacks on
Christianity go up. Christian you better get ready. This trend is
likely to get much worse. Soon it might really cost you something to be a
Christian in America. There will be a price to pay. There will be
persecution to be bourn. Very soon America could be more like the rest of
the world as far as persecution against Christians.
Christian, you better get ready. Make sure your
Christianity is more than skin deep. Is your Christianity real, or is it
just some feel good entertainment. If we don't have revival soon,
persecution will be very real for anyone who stands for Jesus. I for
one do not want to see persecution. I don't think that you do either.
But persecution will do some good. One thing is that it will purge
the local Churches of chaff. The entertainment only seekers will leave.
Those who are not for real, will leave. What you will have left is those
who really love Jesus and love His Word enough to stand even when faced with
vicious persecution. People like that will appreciate Bible study and good
Bible preaching. They will be honestly trying to win others to Jesus.
Persecution could return many local churches to doing what they should be doing,
and purge them of sin. In that respect some persecution would be a good
thing.
The world hates Christians. As the world
completely takes over our country more of that hate will become evident.
Christian are you ready? How deep is your faith? Will you stand for
Jesus if it costs you your job? How about your freedom?

King James Bible Main Index:
JN 17:1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
JN 17:2 As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
JN 17:3 And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
JN 17:4 I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.
JN 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.
JN 17:6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.
JN 17:7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee.
JN 17:8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
JN 17:9 I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine.
JN 17:10 And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them.
JN 17:11 And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.
JN 17:12 While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.
JN 17:13 And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
JN 17:14 I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
JN 17:15 I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.
JN 17:16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
JN 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.
JN 17:18 As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world.
JN 17:19 And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.
JN 17:20 Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;
JN 17:21 That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
JN 17:22 And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one:
JN 17:23 I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.
JN 17:24 Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.
JN 17:25 O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me.
JN 17:26 And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.

JN 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory
which I had with thee before the world was.
This is yet another place where Jesus claimed to be
God. Jesus says that He was with the Father before the
world was. Nothing existed before creation except God. So for Jesus
to be with the Father before creation would mean that Jesus is God.
Jesus also makes it clear that not only was He with the Father but that He also
had glory with the Father. In this verse we see two
personalities of the Trinity. God the Father and God the Son.
We sometimes have trouble grasping the concept of the
Trinity. Simply stated it is One God manifested to us in 3 personalities.
Each one distinct but yet they are one. Some would argue
that the word Trinity is not in the Bible. That may be true but what it
stands for is. Over and over again you will see God the Father, God the
Son, and God the Holy Spirit in the Bible. The Bible also clearly declares
that there is only one God. Jesus also said that He and His Father are
one.
The Bible clearly teaches the Trinity. |
