Thought On This Chapter

MT 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Jesus was much more than a man.  He was God with us.  Jesus was God manifested to us in the flesh.  He was 100 percent man and 100 percent God at the same time.  We cannot fully comprehend it.  But we know that nothing is too hard for God.

Phi 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Phi 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: Phi 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: Phi 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

The Bible is very clear.  Jesus existed before the manager.  He was in the form of God and thought it not robbery to be equal with God.  That is because Jesus is God.  He is one with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.  There is only one God and He is manifested to us in 3 distinct personalities.  It is because of who He is, that made the work He did on the cross effective.

If Jesus was not God, then we worship in vain because man can not save man from his sin.  But Jesus is God.  He was born of a virgin, He did live a sinless life, He did pay for our sin on the cross, He took the wages of sin upon Himself, which is death.  Then He rose again, proving that death could not hold Him.  Proving that the payment had been accepted.  Only Jesus saves.  He is much more than a good man who lived once long ago.  He is the everlasting, all sufficient, all powerful Lord.

MT 1:1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.

MT 1:2 Abraham begat Isaac; and Isaac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;

MT 1:3 And Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar; and Phares begat Esrom; and Esrom begat Aram;

MT 1:4 And Aram begat Aminadab; and Aminadab begat Naasson; and Naasson begat Salmon;

MT 1:5 And Salmon begat Booz of Rachab; and Booz begat Obed of Ruth; and Obed begat Jesse;

MT 1:6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

MT 1:7 And Solomon begat Roboam; and Roboam begat Abia; and Abia begat Asa;

MT 1:8 And Asa begat Josaphat; and Josaphat begat Joram; and Joram begat Ozias;

MT 1:9 And Ozias begat Joatham; and Joatham begat Achaz; and Achaz begat Ezekias;

MT 1:10 And Ezekias begat Manasses; and Manasses begat Amon; and Amon begat Josias;

MT 1:11 And Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon:

MT 1:12 And after they were brought to Babylon, Jechonias begat Salathiel; and Salathiel begat Zorobabel;

MT 1:13 And Zorobabel begat Abiud; and Abiud begat Eliakim; and Eliakim begat Azor;

MT 1:14 And Azor begat Sadoc; and Sadoc begat Achim; and Achim begat Eliud;

MT 1:15 And Eliud begat Eleazar; and Eleazar begat Matthan; and Matthan begat Jacob;

MT 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.

MT 1:17 So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.

MT 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

MT 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.

MT 1:20 But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost.

MT 1:21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

MT 1:22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying,

MT 1:23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

MT 1:24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife:

MT 1:25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name JESUS.

Thought on This Chapter

The virgin birth is very important.  The sin nature is passed thru the man.  If Jesus had a human father, then he would have been born with a sin nature and would have needed a savior himself.  But being virgin born, Jesus had no sin nature.  Therefore He was a suitable sacrifice.  He could be the just dying for the unjust.  Because He had no sin of His own, He could die for our sin.

Thought on This Chapter

This is one of two genealogies of Jesus in the Bible.  The other one is in the book of Luke.  This line starts with Abraham who was the head of the Jewish race.  This line continues thru King David and ends with Jesus' step father Joseph.  The purpose of this genealogy is to show that Jesus fulfilled prophecy and came from the seed of both Abraham and of David.  Both were a requirement for the coming messiah.   This also shows that Jesus has legal right to the throne of David.  How fitting that this genealogy starts off the gospel that shows Jesus as King.
