Thought On This Chapter

TIT 3:1 Put them in mind to be subject to principalities and powers, to obey magistrates, to be ready to every good work,

As Christians we are to be in subjection to the government that we are living under.  The government makes laws that we might not like, but we are to obey them anyway.  They can raise our taxes and we are to pay them.  They can set a speed limit of 35mph where it clearly should be 50mph.  These kinds of laws are to be obeyed regardless of what we think about them.

The Bible teaches  that we are to be in subject to the powers that God has put over us.  This then brings up the question, are we to obey the government no matter what?  The answer is no.  If the government tells us to do something that is against what God says, then we are to obey God and not man.  For example if the government say that we cannot assemble for worship, then we must not listen to them because the Bible clearly teaches otherwise.

Heb 10:25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some [is]; but exhorting [one another]: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

If the government tells us to quit preaching against the sin of homosexuality, then we must not listen to them because we are commanded by God to preach the whole counsel of God.

In short we are to be in subject to the powers of government even if we do not like it, unless what the government is telling us to do is against the clear teaching of the Word of God.

TIT 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

You either believe in works or you believe in the Bible.  That is your only two choices.  The Bible is so clear on it.  Man cannot save himself.  It is NOT by works of righteousness which we have done.  Salvation is not from anything that you do.  Joining a church does not save.  Getting baptized does not save.  Doing good deeds does not save.  Our righteousness is no good.  It cannot pay for our sin.  Salvation is according to his mercy he saved us.  He did it all by Himself.

Heb 1:3 Who being the brightness of [his] glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Jesus does not need anyone's help.  He purged our sins by himself.  And then He sat down on the throne because there was no more work to be done.  Jesus said it is finished.  There is nothing more to be done.  Salvation is done.  He did all the work.  It is a free gift.  We only have to accept it.

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Joh 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

Since the Bible is so clear on salvation thru grace by faith and NOT of works, why do so many people believe in works?  I can sum it up in one word.  Pride.  Works appeals to the sinful prideful heart of man.  I hope that you have put away your pride, and called out to God for His mercy to save you.

TIT 3:4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,

TIT 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

TIT 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

TIT 3:8 This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that thou affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.
